How to create an ATS-friendly resume
Adapt your CV for automated applicant tracking systems.
Why does this matter?
Employers often scan a resume for only a short time. Your information therefore needs to be clear, structured and relevant to the role. A strong CV does more than list experience: it shows the value you can create.
Key principles
- Put the most important information first. Your name, profession, contact details and short professional profile should be visible immediately.
- Use numbers to show results. Replace vague duties with specific achievements such as “increased sales by 20%”.
- Tailor it to the vacancy. Use the important skills and terms from the job description naturally.
- Choose a simple design. Excessive graphics and complex columns can make a CV harder for ATS systems to read.
Practical tip
Review every sentence by asking: “Why does the employer need this information?” If there is no clear answer, shorten it or remove it.
Final checklist
- Spelling and contact details checked
- Job title matches the vacancy
- Experience is in reverse chronological order
- Every key achievement is specific and measurable
- The file is a clearly named PDF
